CBSE Confirms 12th Maths Question Paper’s Authenticity After QR Code Videos
A QR code on the CBSE class 12th maths board exam paper led to a Youtube music video, raising concerns. In the latest statement, the board verified the papers to be authentic.
“It is hereby confirmed by the board that the question papers are genuine,” read the official press release by CBSE on its official X handle a day after the CBSE class 12th Maths exam on March 9, 2029. The presence of a QR code on the question paper, which linked to a Youtube music video, had raised concerns about the genuineness of the question paper. However, the latest press release settled all concerns. The statement was signed by the CBSE Controller of Examinations – Dr. Sanyam Bhardwaj.
The Context of the Rickroll Case
After the CBSE maths class 12th exam on March 9, 2026, videos went viral showcasing a QR code on the exam paper leading to the Youtube music video of the 1987 song ‘Never You Give Up’ by Rick Astley. What followed were stress, chaos and doubts pointing to a compromised question paper. The board, however, timely jumped in to cut the clutter.
A source is reported to comment, “The QR code can lead to something…a random code or anything else that is known internally to verify that the paper is genuine. In this case, the QR code led to the music video. The security of the question paper has not been compromised, but we have cautioned the internal unit dealing with this that such links are not to be used in future to determine that the paper is genuine”.
What transpired in the CBSE Class 12th Maths exam is termed as ‘Rickrolling’ – an internet prank where a link meant for something else eventually leads to the Rick Astley music video.
